Swirl marks, scratches and oxidation

Swirl marks are the fine circular scratches you see when sunlight hits a dark bonnet. They come almost entirely from bad washing: automatic car wash brushes, a single dirty bucket, or wiping a dry car with a cloth. Each one is a tiny groove in the clear coat that scatters light, which is what makes paint look flat and grey instead of deep.

Deeper scratches, swirl trails from a tunnel wash, water spot etching and oxidation on older single stage paint are all the same category of problem: damage sitting in the clear coat. Scratch removal by machine works when the defect is inside that layer. If a scratch catches your fingernail it is usually through to the primer, and that is a respray, not a polish. How the correction is done

Correction starts with decontamination: a chemical wash, iron fallout removal and a clay bar to pull embedded grit out of the surface. Polishing a contaminated panel just drags that grit across the paint.

Then the paint is machine polished in stages. A cutting stage with an abrasive compound levels the clear coat until the defects are gone, and a refining stage removes the light haze cutting leaves behind. On badly neglected paint that can mean three passes. On a well kept daily driver one refined stage may be enough.

Clear coat is finite. Every correction removes a few microns of it, which is why we correct to the level the paint actually needs rather than chasing perfection on a car that will be washed at a filling station next month. Correction is normally paired with a ceramic coating so the finish is protected rather than left exposed again immediately.

New car protection

A brand new car is the best possible candidate. The clear coat is untouched, so correction is minimal, and a coating applied then keeps it that way for years. If you have just taken delivery of something you intend to keep, this is the cheapest correction you will ever buy, because there is almost nothing to correct.
