What a ceramic coating actually does

A wax sits on top of your paint and lasts a few weeks. A ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat and becomes part of the surface, which is why it lasts two to five years instead. The coating is harder than the paint under it, so light marring from washing has to get through the coating first.

Day to day, the difference you notice is water. A coated panel sheds water and road dirt on contact rather than letting it sit and dry into spots. Bird lime, tree sap and brake dust have a much harder time bonding to the surface, which matters in Johannesburg where cars spend summer under afternoon storms and winter under dust.

The other difference is how easy the car becomes to wash. Most of what makes a dirty car hard work is grit keying into bare clear coat. On a coated car a safe two bucket wash lifts almost everything without pressure, which over time means far fewer swirl marks in the paint.

Why paint correction has to happen first

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If the paint has swirl marks, oxidation or scratches from a car wash brush, coating over them seals those defects under a hard layer for years. That is why our ceramic coating work always includes multi stage paint correction first, and why the price starts at R5,999 rather than the cost of a bottle.

Multi stage paint correction means machine polishing in more than one step: a cutting stage that levels the clear coat down past the defects, then a refining stage that removes the haze cutting leaves behind. Done properly it restores the depth and clarity that makes a dark car look wet. Done in one rushed pass it temporarily fills defects with polish oils that wash straight back out.

What happens on the day, and afterwards

The car is decontaminated and clay barred, the paint is corrected, panels are wiped down to strip polishing oils, and only then is the coating laid down panel by panel and levelled by hand. It is a one to two day job depending on the vehicle and the state of the paint, and it is not work that can be rushed.

Afterwards the coating needs to cure. Keep the car dry for the first day, and avoid automatic car washes permanently: spinning brushes are what put the swirl marks there in the first place. A safe hand wash every couple of weeks is all the maintenance a coated car needs.
